  • Midsize Jet: $27,800 to $33,900 – These jets are best for slightly longer and more spacious/comfortable flights, and include the Citation Latitude, Hawker 800XP, and Gulfstream G-150.
  • Super Midsize Jet: $33,800 to $41,300 – More cost effective than Heavy Jets for smaller parties, these aircraft can fly 3,000 miles or more on a single tank, and include the Citation X, Falcon 50, and Challenger 300.
  • Heavy Jet: $40,000 to $48,900 – These jets travel over 4,500 miles, fit anywhere from 9 to 18 passengers, and offer the largest cabins available in the charter market. Examples include the Challenger 604, Gulfstream G-450, and Falcon 900EX.

While the light and midsize jets are a bit less expensive, it is recommended you consider a super midsize or heavy jet at minimum. NY to LA is about 2,451 miles through the air.

Light and midsize jets may require one or two fuel stops. Some super-midsize jets can travel non-stop but there are some that cannot, and wind may play a role. Heavy and ultra long range jets are all non-stop, with super midsize jets and heavy jets providing the best possible value.  Total travel time including fuel stop(s) in a Light/Midsize jet can reach 10hrs as opposed to only 5.5hrs in a Heavy aircraft.

Best Airports for Private Jets Between NYC and LA

Private Jet NYC to LANew York City and Los Angeles are such active travel hubs that there are quite literally over a dozen airports to choose from when you charter a private jet. Perhaps not surprisingly, these airports are often quite busy, as most of them are used by commercial airliners. Very few have the amenities, distance, and comfort that a luxury flier expects with a private charter.

We recommend the following airports:

  • Van Nuys Airport (VNY) – Though it is located 20 miles from downtown LA, Van Nuys Airport has 4 FBOs with less expensive fuel, plenty of comfortable amenities, and fewer passengers, which means a better time getting in and out of the airport.
  • Teterboro Airport (TEB) – Teterboro Airport is located in New Jersey, but it is only 15 miles from downtown Manhattan. It also has 5 FBOs, and serves almost primarily private jets and related aircraft.

What About Other Private Jet Airports in NYC?

Although Teterboro is our recommended airport, other airports such as Republic (FRG), Westchester County (HPN), and Frances Gabreski (FOK) are smaller airports that are perfectly capable of hosting a luxury traveler. However, the main NYC airports, including JFK and LaGuardia (and to a lesser extent Newark Airport, or EWR) are often far too busy and expensive for private travel.

What About Other Private Jet Charter Airports in LA?

Van Nuys is often the preferred airport for private jets to LA from NYC, but Burbank/Bob Hope Airport (BUR) and Hawthorne (HHR) are both great options for private flights, depending where in LA you are heading. Unless arriving by an international commercial flight or connecting to one, Los Angeles Airport (LAX) is not recommended.  Congestion and ATC delays dilute the overall private experience at major hubs like LAX.
